Don’t Waste your Alpha Time

Ever get great ideas first thing in the morning? In the morning as you are waking up, your brain is likely producing alpha waves as you transition from sleep to a calm and focused state. This is a great time to center on relaxation techniques like deep breathing, gentle stretching, or meditation to help set the tone for your day.

Far too often, this time can be squandered by immediately picking up your phone and reading possibly disturbing news or watching nonsense reels.

Here’s an idea, let’s use that alpha time to give yourself the best start for an awesome productive day. Immediately upon waking, try the following:

Deep breathing – take slow deep breaths, inhaling through your nose and exhaling slowly through your mouth.

Mindful observation – while breathing, gently observe your thoughts without judgement. Just let them pass through.

Gentle stretching – do some light stretches to relax your body.

Visualization – While breathing deeply, close your eyes and imagine a peaceful scene or a positive experience.

Guided meditation – Follow a guided meditation that supports alpha wave activity. Apps like Insight Timer, Calm or Headspace can provide some helpful guided meditations.

The benefits of this morning practice is:

  • Reduced stress

  • Improved focus

  • Increased creativity

  • Positive mood
